California Towhee

I’ve been having quite a few California Towhees in my backyard lately which is surprising because they eat seeds, which I’ve removed from my yard. They seem to eat the little pieces of suet that fall on the ground because of the other birds.

They keep tripping me up because I think that it’s a new bird every time because in low light they look super gray (see images above). Once they hop into the sun, you can catch a glimpse of that telltale rufous underside. The new way that I’ve started to figure out this particular towhee in shadows is to look at their eyes. They have this distinctive red eye and the area around the eye is a little red which gives me a bloodshot eye look.
