Balancing Act
A juvenile Scrub Jay balancing on a stick in the middle of a valley at Discovery Lake. It just seems like an odd choice of landing place, but it made for a good picture, so I’m not complaining!

A Ruddy Duck getting their head feathers messed up in the rain. I was getting my hair messed up too trying to get a photo! So exciting that we are finally getting rain in California!

I’ve been really enjoying hanging out at Discovery Lake lately. This little guy was playfully swimming around in the rain.
I’ve noticed that there are certain colors that are just rare in nature. Blue and purple seem to be the least common of the main colors out there. Try to think of how many animals and plants are blue or purple. The list is pretty short!
That’s one of the reasons that I love Ruddy Ducks. They look so average until you see their pale blue bills. Bam! Blue!
I’ve had a hard time getting a good shot of a Ruddy Duck because they have a tendency of hanging out in the middle of lakes, but Discovery Lake has a dock (who knows why, you can’t have boats on the lake, it’s too small) that goes right into the middle of the lake. Obviously, the ducks are fed on a frequent basis because they swim right up to you. It was lightly raining when I took this shot, but the ducks didn’t seem to mind. I guess if you hang out in water all day, what’s a little rain?
So, a friend of the family recommended that I try birding around Discovery Lake. Although I didn’t see all that much, it’s not surprising given the time of year… but I did catch a pair of American Coots with their two babies.
