Another Costa’s Hummingbird watercolor. This wasn’t my favorite, but it was my mom’s favorite, so I thought that I would post it. I was trying to see if I could create an effect on the gorget that mimicked the scaly effect of feathers.

Trying something different with this one. It kinda reminds me of 20s stained glass for some reason.

This little hummer looks like he’s chuckling to me. I’ve been really inspired by my Chinese Brush Painting class. I’ve been trying to incorporate the minimal feeling of Chinese Brush Painting while also keeping it within the Western tradition of watercolor. Hope you like it!

A grumpy little hummingbird also inspired by my Chinese Brush Painting class. I’m trying to blend my current style with it and see what comes of it. Hope you like it.

This is my favorite of the latest hummingbird watercolors because it seems to capture the same watchful position that the hummingbirds take in my backyard. I also really enjoy how the color blends together at the base of the head and the top of the stick.

I’ve been taking a Chinese brush painting class taught by Jean Shen at the Athenaeum Music and Arts Library in La Jolla. Although I haven’t really learned enough to paint a proper bird painting using Chinese brush painting strokes, I thought it would be fun to try to meld the techniques into my own type of work to see what comes of it.
Once I learn enough to do an actual brush painting, I’ll post it!

A Costa’s Hummingbird feasting on purple flowers. I’ve been getting one Costa’s running around the yard that I see every few days. I’ve had a hard time capturing a photo so I did some watercolors instead!
