Brown and blue

Brown Pelican

A Brown Pelican hanging out at the Oceanside Pier.

I recently heard that you only find Brown Pelicans at the ocean and White Pelicans at lakes. Since we only have the two types in California, it’s easy to figure out which one it is based on what body of water you are looking at. So far, I’ve found that to be true. I can’t seem to find anything online about it. Please let me know if you’ve heard that tip too!

  1. I think that’s a good generalization, but one that doesn’t always hold true. Hopefully the link below will work. If you take a look at eBird data, Brown Pelicans have been seen in and around inland lakes including Lake Michigan and Lake Erie. They are definitely rare in these areas, but they do show up from time-to-time.

    1. Good point. I was really meaning for it to apply to the San Diego area since I haven’t been to that part of the country perhaps they both types hang out together. In California, I don’t know if we allow for such behavior! 😉
