Lots of Gulls on the Pier

Gulls on the Pier

I liked my Gulls on the Pier so much that I decided to turn it into a triptych. These are on the Arches coldpress paper and I’m excited to see how they will turn out. I got the idea from a series of three watercolors that I purchased in Italy of the Italian countryside. They were tiny, tall, and skinny so I framed them in huge frames to make them fit onto an entire wall.

I’ve had several people inquire about purchasing artwork from me, so I’m in the process of figuring out how to make that happen. I’ll be redoing my website so I can have an online store. Please let me know what kind of pieces you would like to see there!

I’ll keep you updated on my progress.

Gulls on the Beach

Gulls on the Beach

I got some Pebeo Drawing Gum last time I was at Rhino Art company. I’ve been dying to figure out how to use it with my artwork. I outlined the work in the drawing gum to keep the watercolor outlines as straight as possible. I wasn’t able to get the lines as straight as I would have liked because it’s so hot here that the fan I had running kept drying out the gum as soon as it touched the paper. I really only had one shot at laying it down.

Birds that are white always cause an issue for me because I’m not sure how to make them interesting. Since there is no much color on the bird, you have to make the picture interesting by adding color in the background.

Anyways, I would love your feedback!

Gulls Still on the Pier

Gulls on the Pier 2

Another version of my Gulls on the Pier. I wanted to see what it would look like with the drawing gum technique around the edge of the background. I don’t love the water or the shading as much as the first one, but I wanted to see what it would look like before I tried it out on nicer paper.

I’m thinking of doing a ‘gulls sitting on stuff’ series. I don’t know why, but it’s so amusing to me to go to the beach and see gulls sitting on every single possible surface. They are very versatile creatures. 🙂

Flowers of Gold

Goldfinches
I’m doing a watercolor for my niece for Christmas. She’s a huge fan of goldfinches and she’s getting into art, so I thought that she would like a watercolor of goldfinches for Christmas. I’m not done yet, but here is the inked portion.

I’ve done it on Arches cold-press paper and this is in the first time I’ve tried to use microns on it. The ink didn’t absorb into the paper as much as I would have liked, so I had to go over the lines several times. I think I’ll increase the size of the pens I use next time.

I’ll keep you posted once I’ve applied the watercolor.

My Art is Available at Auction

Many people have been inquiring about my art for purchase, so I’m happy to announce that one of my watercolors is up for auction to benefit the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy! The SELC helps protect and enhance the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve which includes 1,000 acres of habitat that hosts more than 700 species of plants and animals. The lagoon is vital to bird migration and is home to hundreds of native San Diego bird species, including several threatened species.

SELNatCtr_webAlso, if you never made it to the San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center, you have to go and take the kids. The building is LEED certified, has great views, and the most adorable rooftop garden. They have an amazing trails that are ADA accessible.  This lagoon has been so lovingly restored that it’s an absolute blast to go visit. If hanging out in lagoons isn’t your thing, this is the one lagoon you should go visit.

Please help me support this great cause by checking out my artwork and the other items up for auction online!
